The development of algebraic thinking is a process, not an event. It is something that can be part of a positive, motivating, enriching school mathematics experience (Cathy Seeley, 2004). Algebra and Algebraic thinking are central to the high school curriculum and research has shown that students should be introduced to algebraic thinking as early as pre-K. Algebra and Algebraic thinking are so crucial because they serve as a foundation for understanding more advanced mathematics concepts. Given the importance of algebraic thinking, this session will focus on how the 8 standards for mathematical practices can be used to support the algebraic thinking of English Language Learners.
